| "...[O]ne of the best American singer-songwriters... a masterful songwriter."-- Kevin McCarthy | |
| All the songs on Thugs and Lovers
were written and recorded in the Winter/Spring of 2004, except parts of "Pink
Flamingos," which originated in Springfield, MA, in 1976, and "Somebody Who
Will," which came from NYC in 1975. Friends' homes, bus stations, a high school
auditorium, an
AA meeting -- I can't remember all the places these songs came from. Recorded
live, more or less shortly after they were written, over-dubs were pointless....with the
exception of the harmonica solo on "Flamingos," which required the use of a
badly mis-used reed for that beautiful tone. What mixing was necessary took place in
a rented room on Old Beach Road in Newport, RI. By the time I made this record, my Guild had imploded and I was using two nearly identical Alvarez RD8's (less than $300 each, including tax and hard-shell case) manufactured by 25 very skilled Chinese girls, no doubt, for 25 cents per hour. Anyone wishing to read into these songs the impact of a recent divorce is welcome to do so, but why belabor the issue? Mastered by David Correia at Celebration Sound as usual.
