"...[O]ne of the best American singer-songwriters... a masterful songwriter."-- Kevin McCarthy

All the songs on Thugs and Lovers were written and recorded in the Winter/Spring of 2004, except parts of "Pink Flamingos," which originated in Springfield, MA, in 1976, and "Somebody Who Will," which came from NYC in 1975.  Friends' homes, bus stations, a high school auditorium, an AA meeting -- I can't remember all the places these songs came from.   Recorded live, more or less shortly after they were written, over-dubs were pointless....with the exception of the harmonica solo on "Flamingos," which required the use of a badly mis-used reed for that beautiful tone.  What mixing was necessary took place in a rented room on Old Beach Road in Newport, RI.

By the time I made this record, my Guild had imploded and I was using two nearly identical Alvarez RD8's (less than $300 each, including tax and hard-shell case) manufactured by 25 very skilled Chinese girls, no doubt, for 25 cents per hour.

Mastered by David Correia at Celebration Sound as usual.

temporary blues

woke up from my dreamin
you found some one new
guess i saw it comin
guess you knew it too
hope you found your real companion
hope this time it's true
temporary partners give ya
temporary blues

can't unclimb the chapel tower
can't unring the bell
can't unmemorize the night we
spent in that hotel
used to be sweet misery
now all of that is done
today is temporary so
tomorrow gets to come

people treat me gentle
everywhere i go
comfort me with kindness
say, boy, you oughta know it's like
runnin for the white house
it aint runnin to be king it's
temporary, thompson it's a
temporary thing

ever since she quit me
i aint got no home
living from a day sack
four wheels on the road
lord, take these afflictions
consolate me, too
waitin on the liftin of these
temporary blues

not your business now

you took most of the money
you took all of the goods
didn't i walk with you, honey?
till you were out of the woods
you worried a lot about me
but that didn't stop you no how
and if I'm feelin blue, baby
it's not your business now

we used to walk together
arm in arm through town
i was proud of you
you were proud of me
we were proud just walkin around
but you let go of my hand
for reasons you allow
and where i walk to now, girl
it's not your business now

we used to roll together
a couple of puppies in bed
tell each other our secrets
all the dreams in our head
sleep with who you want to
make love if you know how
who i'm wakin up with
it's not your business now

home is where the heart is
i built our home with my hands
once we had a future
God had other plans
you taught me a lesson
how to break a vow
and if i am forgiven
it's not your business now

crawlin out of wakefield

i was named after my uncle who was s'posed to be great
daddy hated him until i learned how to hate
we moved up to a house in East Longmeadow at 3
back in the days when a suburb had trees
landlord pulled that house down while we was livin in it
crawlin out of wakefield on a pirate ship

my momma worked the cornfield, sold avon door to door
sisters on the farm wondered what a shakespeare's for
i tooled around the orchard, hauled my apples to the kitchen
watched saturday cartoons on the rich folks television
doctor told my momma that my daddy was real sick
crawlin out of wakefield on a pirate ship

i was six or seven when i got me the blues
the house would shake and rattle from the b-52's
shrieking into Chicopee at 4 a.m.
loaded with the nightmare of the living end
hollerin in the darkness, "daddy, come here quick!"
crawlin out of wakefield on a pirate ship

too smart for my own good dressed up in my hand-me-downs
anywhere i went it was the dark side of town
teachers was all white folks-- i was the lucky one
black kids beat me up some times, i couldn't blame em none
you learn to hide your pride and do not give no lip
crawlin out of wakefield on a pirate ship

knee-deep in the wreckage of my so-called mental health
wasn't taking prisoners except, of course, my self
lacking any maps or chart i set out on my search
Jung and old and New Age and the Springfield Baptist Church
yes I tried religion but it did not stick
crawlin out of wakefield on a pirate ship

i cut my first lp in '73 on c b s
someone musta thought I had some promise, I guess
when it hit the fan i had the man on the phone, said,
"we own all your shit, but, baby, you're on your own"
aint no second chances when you don't got no hit
crawlin out of wakefield on a pirate ship

all my days I hunger after heroes from the sea
daddy liked to gamble, left the drinkin up to me
i was left to ramble from New England on south
met most every kind who suck the soul out through your mouth
daddy like to gamble-- didn't drink a lick
crawlin out of wakefield on a pirate ship

see me as a monkey in my easter bonnet
a guitar and a typewriter-- I'll jump up on it
tap-dance like a centipede upon a comet
give me time and time enough I'll write your sonnet
when they ask me how I do it, I just say
Shakespeare got it done cause nothin got it his way

long haul

i'm a long haul trucker
on an ever since mile
got a stripped down rig
from a long gone style
don't have to hurry don't
have to hustle
movin so fast don't
move a muscle

long haul
long haul
takin it all the way to the wall
long haul
long haul
in it for the long haul

in the wide wide open
in the shiftin snow
got wheels and gears and
miles to go
pullin my weight
when it's drivin time
plenty women willing
for a ride like mine

[chorus]

don't carry no treasure
that i can't get near it
takin my measure from
the holy spirit
blowin through here
like a midnight shower
turnin it over to a higher power

[chorus]

traffic backed up
out on u.s. 1
makin bankrupt magic
and talkin in tongues
put your feet on the dash
sit back in your hat
baby, i like it
when you ride like that

a man stands up

when you're on your own
when the way is clear
when you know the cost
when you feel the fear
when the angels call
and the demons draw near
a man stands up
a man stands up

when a sister's lost
when she's left behind
when a brother falls
on the hardest times
when a child's life
is on the line
a man stands up
a man stands up

with a tender heart
with an open mind
with a will to heal
when the world is blind
in the face of greed
and the party line
a man stands up
a man stands up

and the circle grows
and the family mends
and the warriors pause
recognize their friends
and the dance begins
and the killing ends
a man stands up
a man stands up

nothin like

nothin like the beating of my true love's heart
nothin like her voice beside me in the dark
nothin like the distance when were far apart
nothin like the circle of my true love's arms
lord, if i could only find her
lay my body down beside her
nothin like the beating of my true love's heart

nothin like the fire in my true love's kiss
nothin like the body of the one i miss
nothin like a friend who tells it like it is
nothin like surrender to her tenderness
lord if i could only find her
lay my body down beside her
nothin like the fire in my true love's kiss

nothin like the beauty in my true love's eyes
nothin like the shining in the blue, blue skies
nothin like the feelin of her hand in mine
nothin like the shadow that she left behind
lorde if i could only find her
wake up in my bed beside her
nothin like the beauty in my true love's eyes

buildin on your case

you can bring your hammer, baby
i can bring the chalk
measure out the distance tween
the talkin and the walk
buildin on your case all the time
i been buildin mine

you can bring the wrenches, baby
you can bring the drill
jack it up four ways from sunday
add it to the bill
drop the walkin papers at me feet
fixin on quittin is a two-way street

[chorus}
buildin on your case
buildin on your case
buildin on your case, pretty mamma
buildin on your case
who hid the devil in the hollow tree?
the bubble in the level says it wasn't me

haul your timber to the sawmill
get your lumber cut
figure who got screwed out later
when your walls are up
who drew the blueprints for the door?
you're gonna work it out what the blue is for

[chorus]

someone brought the sugar, sugar
someone brought the salt
someone better bring a bigger mirror, baby
lookin for the fault
who got nervous for the service of
a lawyer in the foyer of the house of love?

somebody who will

it's as clear as night and day baby
we just can't connect
i got too much to unfold here
you got too much to protect
you're a little too hard to get to
you got so much time to kill
if ya still don't know
what i'm talkin about
i'd better find
somebody who will

you say that you will baby
i think that you won't
you say that you do baby
from here it looks like you don't
you keep a lame man in your alley
you keep a blind man at your windowsill
if you can't afford to fill their cup
they'd better find
somebody who will

your burden's just a little too heavy
i can't left it off your back
i'd tell you but i just don't know
where you find somebody like that

so i'm walkin on down the line honey
got these crutches in case of rain
i'd go over this thing a few more times
if it didn't cause me so much pain
i'm just singing to myself baby
as i disappear over that hill
just lookin for somebody
who's lookin for
somebody who will

revelation

she was unexpected like the eye
the eye inside a storm
the look that cuts you to the core
her smile wide and warm
the revelation of her eyes
so wise and sad
she gave you everything except
the faith you never had

the talk that lasted till the morning
the morning sun came through
the way she had of listening
like she'd always been with you
the revelation of her words
and nothin you could add
she gave you everything except
the faith you never had

the anger flashing from her face
the sudden tenderness
a vision of her walking barefoot
in a summer dress
the revelation of her kiss
you wanted her so bad
she gave you everything except
the faith you never had

the sand as hot as frying pans
the ocean burning cold
the moon in that old beach hotel
just up a dusty road
the revelation of her bed
that drives your senses mad
she gave you everything except
the faith you never had

turning off the headlights by the sign
the stop sign in the dark
tearing off your jacket while she opens
she opens up your heart
the revelation of desire
you never dreamed she had
she gave you everything except
the faith you never had

in the dirt upon her knees like praying
prayin to a flower
you knew at once you can't conceive
the fountain of her power
the revelation of her heart
so broken and so glad
she gave you everything except
the faith you never had

god is in his heaven and your mind
your mind is on the road
one day you wake up with the wind
and know you have to go
the revelation of her tears
ya never meant to make her sad
she gave you everything except
the faith you never had

now all your days are haunted by the ghosts
the ghosts you couldn't kill
the ones you never really wanted
the one you always will
the revelation of her soul
exploding in your path
she gave you everything except
the faith you never had
